Westgate Park Beautification Event

The Westgate Community Association has won a Bmore Beautiful grant and we are using the funds to add art, a hopscotch court, a tire train, a chess table with chairs, a sunflower tower, and other fun things to the park. We also plan to remove poison ivy from the large planter that holds the Westgate Park sign so that we can actually get in there and plant flowers safely. We are still in need of a landscaper who can remove the poison ivy and soil (the roots carry the dangerous rash-inducing oil), so if you know anyone please have them reach out to the Association at westgatecommunitynews@gmail.com

All are welcome to join (especially kids) paint/decorate and assemble the above projects on Feb 22 from 10-2 at the Community Of Grace Church School, 5699 Meridale Road, off of Edmondson Avenue. The installation of the projects will take place at the park in the spring (TBD).

Spring Fling on May 11, 2019

We had a fantastic turnout at Spring Fling event! Thank you to all the volunteers for joining us on May 11th to clean up Westgate Park on North Bend Road. The park is used every day by the pre-school across the street and by many, many neighbors - a true gem of our community.

Throughout the park and surrounding area, neighbors could be seen picking up trash. Children painted rocks to decorate the park and some even got involved in planting flowers around the trees. A large wood chipper was rented at a deep discount from ABC Rentals and put to good use shredding tons of branches that were trimmed from the park's trees. There were so much to chip that an assembly line was formed!

Thanks to a 'Love Your Block' grant, the park now has beautiful new benches. And to top it all off, a 'free little library' (pictured on page 1) was installed and donated by neighbors, Kenda and Jacob. The day concluded with a cookout in the beautifed park.

National Night Out August 7, 2018!

From Westgate Community Association President, Robin Kessler: I was so pleased by our community's participation in the National Night Out. Residents, community leaders and public servants came together to celebrate what makes our neighborhoods so special while also demonstrating that crime and violence cannot defeat residents' spirit of hope and determination. There was a wide range of activities such as dunking tanks, cookouts, snowball stands and health monitoring services. The event unites communities and instills trust between citizens and their police officers, firefighters and other public servants. The Night Out is a valuable opportunity to enhance community ties, and I was happy to see the positive responses from all who attended. Strengthening communities is crucial while we continue to work to make our neighborhoods safer.

Park Clean Up on December 7, 2018!

A heartfelt "thank you" to all those who participated in the December 7 “2nd Saturday Clean-up.” This year we not only collected a lot of trash but were also able to clear out all of the overgrowth of vines that were smothering the park trees. Iamperis’ Westway Liquors sponsored a woodchipper, that we were able to obtain at a discounted rate from ABC rentals! And Today’s Pizza donated food and drinks.

These 2nd Saturday Clean-ups are important events to the Westgate community as they keep the trash cleaning at a much more manageable level. The Westgate Community Association is very grateful to the residents of Westgate for their participation—together, they made a tangible difference to protect the community environment.

PLEASE JOIN US every 2nd Saturday of the month (weather permitting), at Westgate Park on North Bend Road (behind the Shell station) starting at 8 AM. If you’d like to come out, meet some of your neighbors, and assist in the cleanups, we think you’ll have a great time. We’ll have all the needed supplies but dress appropriately and bring a pair of work gloves!
